Why?Jacques Marais was a terrific PH. Good eyes, great stalker and good at evaluating game. Provided me with a very good rifle (SAKO .308) and tries to avoid taking animals from or near the truck. Jacques is part of that new generation of South African PHs that do not actually own land, but have access to many concessions. This can also be a time-saver as we did not have to give preference to the PHs holding where certain species may have been a bit thin on the ground. In Jacques case, I think he has 10-12 concessions. He has chosen them carefully in order to ensure an abundance of quality game. Any difficulties we had locating a particular species; for instance finding a good waterbuck was I believe because we were hunting quite late in the season. That had an effect on the numbers of animals and the hunting pressure that they had been experiencing. Nonetheless, we had very, very good hunting.

Additional Hunter Comments and/or Outfitter/Booking Agent Rebuttals
This was my second trip to South Africa so as is with the case with so many hunters, I started on plains game and Cape Buffalo. On this hunt, We concentrated again on plains game and took an aoudad as well. That saved me a trip to Texas. Jacques' trophy fees and day rates are quite reasonable and he is quite willing to haggle over fees with concession owners on your behalf. I believe that this is another advantage of a PH with no lands of his own. nAccommodation can be as mid to high-end as you wish. If you take your wife, Jacques and his wife Hilda will organize as many or as few activities as desired. My trust in Jacques looking out for my interests extends to him organizing a cat hunt for next year even though that is not something he hunts himself. I'm sure that he will only recommend an outfit that he has thoroughly vetted.
