Game Description
Major Game Animals Taken:Deer, Fallow; Boar, Wild (Wild Hog Feral Hog); Chamois, Alpine
Game Sought But Not Taken:Deer, Red; ; ; ;
Game Conditions Comments:The boar and fallow were available in large numbers. The trophy quality was high. For the red stag, it was after the rut, and the big stags are mostly nocturnal. It was hard hunting them as a result at this time of the year. It would have taken luck to get one.

Highlights of Hunt:For this hunt, my wife wanted to spend Europe in Christmas. I wanted to add on a hunt. I contacted the Hunting Consortium as they advertise as being the largest agent for European hunts. They gave me several options for this time of the year. I settled on Croatia. My son (17 years old) also hunted with me. We hunted an estate that is an hour plus drive from Zagreb to start. The whole family spent an enjoyable Christmas in Zagreb, and then my son and I traveled to the hunting area on December 26. The hunting area has large numbers of fallow and boar. So, it was just a matter of time to get good trophies. We hunted from stands and at times, the game was pushed to us in the stand. We also did some spot and stalk, without success. We shot two large trophy boars. And we shot one large bodied boar that had smaller tusks (the trophy fee was half price). And we shot two nice trophy fallow deer. The red stag hunting was tough. After the rut, the large males are mostly nocturnal. It would have taken quite a bit of luck to get one at this time of the year. The guide, who is from Slovenia, offered to take us to Slovenia to hunt chamois. I ended up shooting two, and my son shot one. This was a mountain hunt in the snow. It was hard hunting, but the chamois are in large numbers in that area. So, it was a matter of time to get them. We stayed at the local hunting lodge. It was a great experience. The hunting association was founded in 1946 I believe. And there was a rich tradition of hunting there. Locals would drop by each day to help out by going out to help spot chamois. And they would drop by each day to find out how the hunt went. It was a tough hunt, climbing the mountains in the cold and snow, but I am very glad we did it. We then met up with the family on New Years Eve in Venice. It was overall a great holiday.
Equipment Recommendations:It was cold at that time of the year. One needs proper cold weather hunting clothes and boots.
Would You Recommend This Hunt to a Friend?yes
Why?It was great experience, my first hunt in Europe. A fall hunt might be a better time for the hunt (during the rut for red stag and not so cold). But being able to combine the holidays with a hunt was a wonderful experience for us--everyone was happy. Trophy quality was good. The guides and people were good and friendly. It was a great experience. And the Hunting Consortium was very good and organized. I would definitely book a hunt through them again.
